Start-up Stories – Friday 15 March – 7:30 – 8:25am in the Innovation Precinct

We’ve heard stories of big businesses that started humbly in a garage including Nike, Hewlett Packard and Dell. Come along to St Paul’s School on Friday 15 March and hear another great story. Paul Gehan is the owner of My Tesla Accessories, a business that was kicked off following a conversation with a friend.  One of the drivers for the business was a desire to show his son Oscar, who’s in year 9 at St Paul’s School, how business works and the challenges it presents.  At this event, he’ll explain how it all started, what he learnt as the business grew and what advice he would give to other entrepreneurs.

Career Stories – Thursday 3 May – 12.00 – 12.45am.

Historically, individuals often pursued a single career throughout their working lives. However, in contemporary times, it’s becoming increasingly common for people to change careers multiple times over the course of their lifetime.

Factors influencing career changes include shifts in industries, technological advancements, changes in personal life circumstances, interests or priorities, economic conditions, and opportunities for advancement or higher income. Some estimates suggest that millennials may have as many as 12-15 different jobs over their lifetime, which could encompass several different careers. Ultimately, there is no fixed number of careers that everyone will have in their lifetime, as it varies greatly depending on individual circumstances and choices.

Many teachers at St Paul’s have had varied careers.  Come listen to Mr Miller describe his career and what influenced each career pivot on May 3rd in the ‘Pit’ in the Innovation Precinct at noon.  He has been a legal clerk, and a Union Industrial Officer where he ran cases, defended members in court, and wrote and prepared submissions, before pivoting and becoming a teacher. Listen to him describe the things that influenced each career pivot and what you should consider as you think about your career.

Dr Stanley began her career as a computer programmer before moving into human resource management, consulting, knowledge management, organisational change, innovation and then entrepreneurial education.
